The Marcus Lions Club has begun collecting gently used shoes of all shapes, sizes, and functions as a fundraiser to for specialized eye lenses for premature babies at St. Luke's neonatal intensive care unit in Sioux City.

There are collection boxes in the High School and Marcus Elementary offices.

If able please attend the Mental Health Resource Panel at 6:30pm on January 28th at the Marcus Community Center. Daycare will be provided by the MMCRU FFA. Questions can be present using the QR code in the attached photo.

State Football Championship shirts have been delivered to the Marcus and Remsen offices. High School student shirts will be in lockers this morning. Other shirts can be picked up in your respective office by 2:00pm today or after break.

Due to the forecasted weather tonight the following changes are occuring: Bowling at Spencer has been postponed. Basketball at South O’Brien will be varsity only with the girls game beginning at 4:30pm. We are working on rescheduling the JV games.

Washington High School (Cherokee) and MMCRU school district, are searching for a
candidate with a strong desire to work collaboratively with high school students, their
parents, schools, Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Services staff and local businesses to
develop employability skills in high school students. Interested candidates should possess positive interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently using problem-solving skills to address unique transition issues for high school students.

Interested candidates will serve the school districts of: Cherokee and Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn-Remsen-Union and work collaboratively with Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Services. A background in job coaching, education and/or social work are preferable but not required. This is a full-time position that is split between the two school districts.

Each year the State of Iowa releases the Iowa School Performance Profile (link to profiles) ratings for each public school in Iowa. Scores are arrived at with a scoring formula that takes into account: chronic absenteeism, state testing participation, attendance growth year over year, proficiency on Math and English/Language Arts, and year over year growth in Math and English/Language Arts. The high school has a few additional variables like percentage of students earning college credits while in high school, percentage of students earning an Industry Recognized Credential while in high school and our 4- and 5-year graduation rates.

Because the MMCRU Remsen Elementary did not have enough variables to calculate a valid index score, the index score given to MMCRU Remsen Elementary was mapped from the average index score from the MMCRU Middle School.
Overall, all of our buildings were well above the state average in almost all categories.

MMCRU Families, please read about a great opportunity at MMCRU in conjunction with Dordt University. Sarah Brady and the MMCRU School District have been contributors to a USDA-funded project at Dordt University in Sioux Center, IA to develop innovative curriculum materials for usage by secondary school teachers. Brady is a member of a select cohort of teachers from Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota in the project titled “Bringing Effective and Engaging Science Teaching into the Generation Z (BEESTINGZ) Classroom using Apiculture,” . The project’s goal is to provide teachers with the tools to teach STEM concepts through beekeeping, while also raising awareness about the environmental challenges posed by the decline in honeybee populations. Brady helped develop the BEESTINGZ curriculum which is a new educational resource designed to help secondary school teachers engage Generation Z students in STEM education through the study of honeybees. The resource includes lesson plans, multimedia materials, and ongoing support for educators. The project has been led by Dr. Duane Bajema, professor emeritus of agriculture at Dordt University, and Melanie Bloom, curriculum specialist and teacher at Sioux Central High School. The curriculum combines hands-on learning with environmental education, focusing on the issue of pollinator decline. Designed with flexibility in mind, the BEESTINGZ curriculum is available as a free, open-access, online resource. Teachers can choose individual lessons or implement the entire curriculum for a semester-long series of activities. “There are numerous materials available at a variety of levels, but the availability of a coherent curriculum for secondary teachers is minimal,” says Bajema. “Teachers have had an interest in utilizing honeybee opportunities in their classrooms, but support has been lacking.” The curriculum offers the opportunity to explore honeybees in various contexts, including biology, habitat study, the impacts of pollinator loss, and the production of honey and other bee-related products. Part of a larger initiative to enhance STEM education and promote environmental sustainability, the BEESTINGZ curriculum offers teachers a valuable tool for integrating real-world environmental issues into their classrooms. "The study of honeybees has the potential to address both academic and environmental concerns in a synergistic way," Bajema explains. By using the curriculum, students will be encouraged to apply STEM principles to address future challenges. Additionally, honeybees provide opportunities for local community engagement through science and entrepreneurship, adaptable to various local contexts.
